What's happening with the Mangawhai Road slip realignment?

I've fielded a few queries about the state of the road at the Mangawhai Rd slip site (where the power pole was in the middle of the road for about two years).

It's a bit of a roller coaster ride along there so it's important it gets sorted soon.

In short - the contractor, has acknowledged the issue and has agreed to carry out all remediation at no additional cost to Council.

Here's the lowdown on the situation -Following completion of the initial construction works in January 2026, pavement corrugations were observed and areas of failure once live traffic was introduced to the new alignment. Although minor remedial works were undertaken at the time, it became clear that the pavement remained under stress, resulting in multiple sections showing renewed corrugation and surface deformation.

A detailed remedial plan has since been developed. The contractor commenced work this week, starting with survey investigations and pavement testing to confirm the exact extent and depth of treatment required.

The proposed programme is as follows:

Start of physical remediation works: Tuesday, 7 April 2026 (immediately after Easter)

Expected completion: Prior to ANZAC weekend

Scope of works: Hoeing and re‑compacting the pavement layers to remove undulations, followed by a full reseal of the affected sections.

This treatment approach will address the underlying pavement stress issues and restore the required level of service and long‑term performance of the new alignment.
