I had the privilege of being invited to meet with Northland Regional Council who held their meeting at Mangwhai yesterday.
We collectively met with Karen Thompson and Doug Lloyd of the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society to discuss the issues facing the distal spit and the wonderful work the society is doing to strengthen the spit and keep the harbour navigable.
We then went to the Heads beach to discuss the deterioration of the rock groyne out to Sentinel rock, and how we can work together on a solution to upgrade it.
I emphasised my appreciation of the attention being given to Mangawhai in recent times by the new NRC Council. This is both from the elected leadership especially Chair Pita Tipene, and new Coastal South constituency Councillor John Hunt along with our Kaipara constituency Councilor John Blackwell, and the NRC CE Jonathan Gibbard and senior staff.
We also discussed the Mangawhai Harbour Working Group I recently formed as a mechanism to allow key stakeholders to work together to ensure the health and usability of the harbour for future generations.
