I had the pleasure of turning the sod to mark the commencement of the Mangawhai Heads surf beach carpark extension this morning accompanied by Kaiwaka-Mangawhai councillors Craig Jepson and Luke Canton.
The project will extend the Mangawhai Heads carpark at the surf beach. The extended carpark will address the demand for parking at one of the most popular destinations in Kaipara – which averages nearly 3,000 vehicles per day during the summer period.
It will create more parking spaces including six accessible carparks, a bus drop-off area and expanded bus park to accommodate a 12-metre coach. An additional 67 carparks will be added to the site. The works will take around ten weeks to complete with the work being carried out by contractor Wharehine.
Redevelopment of the carpark is in line with the Mangawhai Heads Reserve Concept Plan which was adopted in 2025 following consultation with the community.
A small portion of existing parking will be unavailable at times, and additional parking will be opened up as the project progresses.
