I had an interesting visit to the site where the rebuild is set to begin on Huarau Road, with crews preparing to restore a major culvert just west of Ford Road.
The culvert was badly damaged during severe weather events in 2025. Initially, one lane of the road remained open, but ongoing ground movement eventually caused the road to collapse completely, forcing a full road closure.
The extent of the damage meant the roading team needed to carry out further ground investigations and redesign the repair works to make sure the site could be rebuilt safely and the road remained resilient into the future.
The project is 82% funded by NZTA through emergency works funding.
Local contractors Huband will carry out the work, scheduled to start on Monday 25 May and be completed by the end of June.
Huarau Road will stay closed while the work is happening, with a detour in place via Ford Road. A big thank you to all the locals who have put up with this extended closure. I am looking forward to seeing it completed in a month or so.
